Anaemia

Anaemia means the blood has less haemoglobin — or fewer healthy red blood cells — than expected. Because haemoglobin carries oxygen, anaemia can cause tiredness and other symptoms. It is a finding with many possible causes rather than a single disease.

Common symptoms

  • Tiredness, weakness or reduced exercise tolerance
  • Breathlessness on exertion
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Pale skin; sometimes a yellowish tinge
  • Palpitations, headaches or poor concentration

Thalassemia and sickle cell disorders are inherited conditions that affect haemoglobin. In thalassemia, the body makes less haemoglobin than usual. In sickle cell disorders, an altered form of haemoglobin can change the shape of red blood cells, making them stiff and prone to blocking small blood vessels.
