Common symptoms associated with anaemia.

Anaemia means the blood has less haemoglobin — or fewer healthy red blood cells — than expected. Because haemoglobin carries oxygen, anaemia can cause tiredness and other symptoms. It is a finding with many possible causes rather than a single disease.

Common symptoms

  • Tiredness, weakness or reduced exercise tolerance
  • Breathlessness on exertion
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Pale skin; sometimes a yellowish tinge
  • Palpitations, headaches or poor concentration

Possible causes

  • Iron, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
  • Blood loss
  • Long-term illnesses affecting blood production
  • Inherited haemoglobin disorders
  • Conditions affecting the bone marrow

When evaluation may be appropriate

Specialist evaluation may be considered when anaemia is unexplained, persistent, does not respond to initial treatment, or appears alongside abnormalities in white cells or platelets.

Thalassemia & Sickle Cell Disorders

Thalassemia and sickle cell disorders are inherited conditions that affect haemoglobin. In thalassemia, the body makes less haemoglobin than usual. In sickle cell disorders, an altered form of haemoglobin can change the shape of red blood cells, making them stiff and prone to blocking small blood vessels.

  • People can be carriers (trait) with few or no symptoms, or have the full condition.
  • Specific tests, such as haemoglobin analysis by HPLC, help identify these disorders.

The body relies on platelets and clotting factors to control bleeding. Problems with either can lead to abnormal bleeding, while other conditions can make blood clot more readily than it should.

Signs that may suggest a bleeding tendency

  • Easy or unexplained bruising
  • Frequent or prolonged nosebleeds; bleeding gums
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Prolonged bleeding after cuts, dental work or surgery
  • Joint pain or swelling after minor injury

Clotting-related concerns

  • Blood clots at a young age or without a clear trigger
  • Repeated clots, or clots in several family members

Seek emergency care immediately for heavy bleeding, sudden chest pain or breathlessness, or sudden swelling and pain in one leg.
